Acupuncture for Achilles Tendinitis

Achilles tendinitis — inflammation of the thick tendon connecting the calf muscles to the heel — causes pain, stiffness, and swelling at the back of the ankle. TCM identifies this as Qi and Blood stagnation in the Bladder and Kidney channels, which both traverse the posterior lower leg. The Kidney governs bones and tendons in Chinese medicine, making Kidney Qi deficiency a common underlying factor in chronic tendon problems.

Acupuncture treatment uses local points BL60 (Kunlun) and BL62 (Shenmai) flanking the Achilles tendon, along with KI3 (Taixi) at the medial ankle to tonify Kidney Qi and support tendon repair. KI7 (Fuliu) strengthens the Kidney's water metabolism to reduce local swelling. Ashi points along the tendon itself address the specific location of pain and microtearing.

Electroacupuncture at 2Hz along the tendon stimulates collagen synthesis and blood flow to this relatively avascular structure. Treatment courses of eight to twelve sessions are typical, and patients are advised to continue eccentric calf strengthening exercises between sessions for optimal tendon remodelling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture help Achilles tendon pain?

Yes. Acupuncture increases blood flow to the Achilles tendon, which has limited natural blood supply, reducing inflammation and promoting tissue repair. Points along the Bladder and Kidney channels specifically target the posterior ankle region.

What does the Kidney have to do with tendons in Chinese medicine?

In TCM, the Kidney governs bones, marrow, and sinews (tendons and ligaments). Chronic or recurrent tendon problems often indicate underlying Kidney Qi or Kidney Essence deficiency, which acupuncture and herbal medicine aim to strengthen.
